Styling Idea # 426 Rustic Stairs

INSPIRATION FOR THIS POST

Wonder where stairs like this lead?? Love a highly polished floor in large areas but if you just get a small chance to play with wood- why not make it rustic? What do you think?

Styling Idea # 398 Window Frame Freshness

INSPIRATION FOR THIS POST

I was lucky enough to score a bait for the Great Dane 10th birthday party last week- if you are not familiar with this Australian icon it is so worth a look-see HERE!

Here is an inspirational quote from there website:

“Ten years ago, on March 30th Anton opened the roller doors of a leaky garage in Prahran to reveal a 40ft container of Danish furniture. 3 hours & 10 cases of Carlsberg later, it had all sold. Great Dane was born. Celebrating ten great years of sharing our passion for Scandinavian design.”

Congrats guys! Ten years is a true achievement.

In other news it is a sunny Monday morning in Melbourne (not THAT rare actually) and I am staring out the window with the need to explore and get out and about. Unfortunately  my window is not a damn cool and clever as this!

These amazing windows are from the clever and sustainable Sunia Homes in LA – worth checking out. Photography Laure Joliet. Found via here. I love how the re-think the shape and design.

Styling Idea # 330 Woolen Stool

INSPIRATION FOR THIS POST

I am pleased to report that my flat mate and I managed to pull of a suitably sophisticated and adult style canapes party on the weekend. Whilst generally I am a cabanossi and cheese cubes kind of entertainer my flat mate pushed us to the limit to deliver everything from home made sausage rolls and bruschetta to lemon rings with Bocconcini, basil and anchovies and balini from a Gourmet Traveller recipe. Phew. I was also treated in return to a splendid party complete with jazz band right inside the inner city apartment. Yes….it seems I have graduated to the grown up parties. And what a joy.

I wonder if being grown up will also mean a return to lovely old fashion pastimes such as knitting (which i can do) and crochet (need idea how!)- but loving these adorable stools. Soon to be available here in Australia via http://www.skyparlour.com.au. I met these girls at the PYD markets and they are just starting out- please email them for more details if you are interested.

Styling Idea # 322 Low Bed High Ceiling

INSPIRATION FOR THIS POST

The Google pages at the moment have a pretend snow falling effect. Fitting, given that I have just been sitting in front of the heater- hello ….December?

So anyway- let’s talk about more exciting things than the weather- let’s talk about vaulted ceilings with futon beds? Why, I never? I know- who would have thought such a high ceiling would support a floor height bed- well, it seems as long as you have a mid-way shelf (or artwork) it appears it’s a match made in heaven. One of the clever peeps on Apartment Therapy owns this bright and sunny room- jealous much?

Styling Idea # 182 Red Lounges

INSPIRATION FOR THIS POST

Oh, dear. It should scream ikea catalogue

But…

  1. They are chesterfields
  2. And red is hot
  3. And the walls are white
  4. And the windows are amazing
  5. So…it works

  • Use the accessories to create a stylish and personal feel so it doesn’t become too hotel lobby- the hanging coats and bag rack are a good example of this
  • Don’t use too many other colours in the room- no bookcases etc needed here to compete with the red
  • Bring in green, tan, black, white and charcoal – but in small amounts no big black and red artwork for example – this is an example where repeating is not going to work.
  • Don’t bring in anything that is black and white at all- that includes photography (which would normally be an ok)
  • Do use flowers to soften the effect
  • Floorboards work well and avoid any 1990′s carpet reference
  • If in doubt buy the brown chesterfield

Styling Idea # 180 Rich Tuesday

INSPIRATION FOR THIS POST

I think even when I am rich that the kitchen in the home should be warm and cosy- nothing too large and ostentasious- you don’t want it to look like it is a commercial space.

I think I would take inspiration from these three rooms to build to ultimate heart of my home!

Styling Idea # 179 Makeshift Outdoor Couch

INSPIRATION FOR THIS POST

Arh autumn.

So pretty yet so fresh. You want to sit outside with a book and a cuppa but it is not conducive to sit on you cold plastic chairs, right?  Here is where the makeshift outdoor couch is an excellent solution for your porch, veranda, sun room or balcony.

Emmas Blog

Take 2 x mattress and pile on top of each other

  • Wrap with old sheets, rugs and throws
  • Stack pillows and cushions against the wall
  • Add a cute mini side table – short enough to keep the feeling whimsical.
  • Add cactus, lantern, candles etc
  • Buy your favourite magazine and sit back with hot drink in hand.

Styling Idea # 178 Room Divider Genius

INSPIRATION FOR THIS POST

Yesterday I shared the idea of the small coffee table for small space.

If I had already seen this photo I would I have posted it first because it wins GENIUS award. Really – you have to have a look at this clever idea, again from Apartment Therapy Small Cool Awards.

  • Now, clever Ariel actually sleeps behind this screen or “glowing box” which I would not like to do everyday however it would be excellent for segmenting a guest bedroom, creating a nook for an office, creating a kids play area or for creating a reading den.
  • No matter the reason this is a very clever and affordable way to create a space that looks great, creates a soft light and hides whatever you do not wants others to see- all good things if you ask me.
  • Note the reflective coffee table which is great for small space and Ariel makes mention that she added mirror panels to all the internal door- she is so smart.

Styling Idea # 177 Bench as Coffee Table

INSPIRATION FOR THIS POST

When you first start writing a blog you always have another blog in mind as inspiration. I wanted my blog to be like Apartment Therapy- then I realized that Australia doesn’t have THAT many apartments and it is a much bigger and better blog headquarters than I ever will be. But I still love to read it- they have done an amazing job of ideas and concepts, one of which is the Small/Cool contest. The idea is simple- small apartments that look amazingly cool. Ta da!

I encourage you to check it out for loads of inspiration and eye candy (if you are not already one of the millions of people ready this site) however I choose to share this with you because it is just sooooo clever.

  • Ok, there are plenty of clever styling ideas here but I want to draw your attention to the wooden bench being used as a coffee table!
  • Notice how narrow the room is however it is been balanced by a small wooden bench and creates an illusion of width!
  • How wide does your coffee table need to be to practical- rest a book, eat dinner, put down your coffee- sound like this is about the right width.
  • Finally- hanging the prints all the way to the ceiling and the mini dining table set up and pure genius too!!
