Styling Idea # 317 Magazine Bench

Oh, did I tell you I saw the Bill Cunningham documentary? It was incredible and inspiring to boot! You should totally go and see this for a lesson on following your passion. One of my favourite things about the film is when it is revealed that he almost never accepts a pay cheque- “as soon as they pay you… they own you”. Gotta love someone who truly believes that and has the courage to live by it.

Bill Cunningham

Bill lived in a small closet size space with filing cabinets and kept every negative of film. Kinda beats a killer stack of magazines….although I do love magazines and would totally love this bench style as my storage choice.

  • Try this in a home office, hall or entrance
  • Keep the piles separate and spaced out
  • When you think you have enough you probably need about 300 more! Get shopping

Styling Idea # 315 Cream Bathroom

Emma Design Blog

I really hate that I have missed two weeks! My internet connection trouble was only supposed to have me offline for a couple of days and here I am a 2 weeks later. Oh well, on wards and upwards- still 485 of these to do so 10 days out is not too bad.

So, what has been happening since I last wrote? Not much actually but I did spend a lovely weekend in Canberra celebrating an engagement. Lots of weddings, engagements and babies around at the moment.

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could stay somewhere special when you go to weddings instead of the usual hotel rooms? I’m thinking of something that could be booked out by guests and is designed to be an accommodation solution when you are at weddings? Powder rooms, baby sitting services, 2 hour dry cleaning, make artists, gift wrapping services, nail salon, handbag hire, hair dressers, late check outs, TV screens welcoming guests!! Wow- I am loving this idea.

You would have to make the bathrooms amazing. This image is more residential (althought it is from Babylonstoren, a luxury hotel in South Africa) but an amazing palette that I will certainly be taking inspiration from.

Styling Idea # 314 Themed Wallpaper

Last night I enjoyed a little wine and little dinner and a little chat with new lovely friends. We checked out 10 Williams St in Paddington. I would recommend for the food and wine but really you could skip the interiors. Amazing how little a place needs to do to get you impressed these days (oh, dear is that two bar rants in the same week? It must be summer so I am getting out more!) I hope that at some stage whilst writing these 1001 ideas I am traveling and can bring you some inspired bars from the likes of Helsinki, New York or Paris….keep your fingers crossed for me.

However, from the comfort of my Newtown terrace here is a nifty wall paper print – wish I could tell you where it is from…..anyone know??? This looks perfectly weekend inspired for me also.

Styling Idea #313 Coloured Tufting

Last night I was watching the wrap up from Spicks and Specks. Are you kidding me? They are finishing one of the best shows in Australia!! Hate that story!

Not sure what the heck that has to do with these colourful chairs but next time you are covering in classic tufting style think twice about linen coloured and opt for something fresh and new. Lemon is nice! x

Styling Idea # 310 Drop Down Bar Table

There is a bit of a running joke in Sydney at the moment that all the small bars opening are designing with “small bars by numbers”. They all take the same approach to interiors- exposed brick, velvet chairs, mismatched dining chairs, artwork, taxidermy…..arhhh it is all a bit boring.

I will get shot for saying this ….but it is also the approach that Melbourne was taking 10 years wonder it has not staying power in Sydney because 1- it is already overdone 2- it is not authentic Sydney.

I love the look of this fit out from Melbourne’s Union Dining.

I was especially impressed with the mini bar coming out of the wall! Why couldn’t you have drop down bars in your house that fold away when not in use? Around the pool? Around the BBQ? Along the side fence for when you have guest in the backyard?? Are you seeing it??

Styling Idea # 309 Candle Sticks

Well, what do you know? It’s Friday already. One day off during the week sick and the days become hard to pinpoint. Not that I am complaining it is wonderful and exciting news.

I have been lusting over this idea for a while I think we should all go back to investing in good old fashion candle stick holders. They are so elegant and timeless and a welcome change from the candles in a glass that seem to be everywhere these days.

Candle Sticks

Design Inspiration

  • The number of candlesticks you use will set the mood- 1 = whimsical, 2 = formal, 3 or more = romantic.
  • Don’t use too many you don’t want to look like a bad 1980’s film clip set…..I’m having some flashback to “Total Eclipse of the Heart?”…..would that be right?
  • Be aware of the height issue when using over dinner- I would prefer to see these on side tables, occasional tables, bathroom window sills, kitchen shelves, sideboards or bookcases- take your pick people.

Whatever you do this weekend I hope it is wonderful and relaxing and wrapped up in some love and cuddles.
