Styling Idea # 377 Folded Back Doona

INSPIRATION FOR THIS POST

Today I am packing up the car and moving. Again.

I left Sydney 3.5 weeks ago and now I am finally on route to My Melbourne! Minus some much loved furniture pieces that don’t fit in a Hyundai Getz but with the important lamps, plants and cushions to make a room mine!

However on arrival it won’t quite look like this! I love the idea of taking a large bold print and folding it back at the end of the of the bed. Don’t get me wrong I adore a white donna as much as the next girl but sometimes a print or colour injection can make a room feel luxurious. Keep your whites for pillows, linens and coverlet and have fun with a strong print at the end only. Of course, repeat with at least one cushion for harmony.

Styling Idea # 376 Style Up the Mattress!

INSPIRATION FOR THIS POST

I missed a day yesterday.

A total DNP (Did Not Post). Sorry. And as for today, I am totally exhausted, fighting the flu and succumbing to the lolling sound of the rain……..zzzzzz.

Anyway….welcome back and thanks for your patience. I found this little gem and thought “Arhh Haa! How clever!” Hope it makes up for it.

What to do when you have a spare room that needs a little something? A space that people could sleep if needed, a space that looks as smart as the rest of your stylish home, a space that says “Hey, don’t use me as a junk room…I demand respect!” I say you style up a mattress!

  • I personally adore the smart, clean lines of the long skinny cushions!
  • However if you are feeling suitably boho and lo-lo (to the ground) adding some Moroccan, Tibetan or Spanish flavored cushions would be spicy and delicious.
  • Yes, add the rug, yes, create a makeshift side table for glasses of water, magazines and a guest soap
  • Yes, hang the wall prints above at a height that works with the low proportions. Anyone caught hanging too high will be disappointed.
  • DO use a thick, quality fitted white sheet (or two) that is not going to show through any nana flowers prints underneath (You may also wish to consider other suitable colours such as grey, linen or navy)
  • If you have a bed and base (mattress with a base support) you could remove the wheels and create a similar look.
  • DON’T ignore this special space when visitors are away – day beds are a fabulous retreat.
  • PS- don’t you just love the way these prints are hung?????

Styling Idea # 375 Panelling Over Wallpaper

INSPIRATION FOR THIS POST

OMG- I spent yesterday meeting some of the most amazing, friendly and helpful (oops, forgot to mention talented) people at Life In Style in Sydney. I had the most encouraging 3 hours talking to people about my *business idea* – lots of support and encouragement. Will totally sit down after the weekend to sort out some shout outs but for now I am getting all dolled up for an 11am wedding! Sophisticated for a Friday don’t we think?

So…..it is fair to say I am feeling a bit visually-over-stimulated at the moment- so many ideas, designers, plans going around but still managed to see LOADS of potential in this idea…

Below it is all tone on tonal however you could go to town with prints that are bright, or paneling that is in neon, or each panel section having a different wallpaper….I mean really there are endless visions dancing in my head right now…I hope you can see them all! How would you do this one??

Styling Idea # 374 B&W Architectural Highlights + Awards

INSPIRATION FOR THIS POST (make sure you read to the bottom today)

I am in love with the idea of Black and White being used to highlight natural architectural features. White is perfect but the splash of black takes these already stunning spaces to another level. When sophistication meets simplicity the result is irresistible. Do we agree? Think skirting, window frames, cornices, panels, doors…..

Styling Idea # 373 – Painted Door Frame

INSPIRATION FOR THIS POST

No, what, another painting idea? Yep- you know you love them. Paint is cheap, but great ideas that transform a space are priceless. Simple simple simple- what do you think people?

  • Good for minimalist wanting to introduce colour in a subtle way.
  • Excellent for open plan archways (shown above) to connect palettes from room to room.
  • A smart idea for renting tenants- easy to paint over when you move out.
  • Think about this if you have doors within rooms such as ensuite and walk in robe in a main bedroom.

Styling Idea #372 Painted Mirrors- Muted Tones

INSPIRATION FOR THIS POST

I spent all day yesterday compiling a competitive review for my commercial finance application. The day was finished with a trip to my lawyer to discuss business company structures and personal liability! Phew…due diligence for business planning you could say!

Anyway…you could also say that I am a bit “paint” obsessed with Styling Ideas lately….bookcases, doors and now ….mirrors! How unoriginal of me! However, I do like simple things that make a big difference. In real life that is my styling mantra (in blogging life I often have more money, more resources and more space).

So, if you are achieving the old layered or repeating effect in a room (taking a colour and using it elsewhere in the space to connect elements) try a slick of paint around the mirror- love these muted colours. Reds, taupe, cinnamon, grey, lilac, burgundy….keep them warm.

  • I would love to see this anywhere the wall size will allow for the statement- entrance, outdoor entertaining, walk in robes, hallways!
  • I love the softer colours however don’t hesitate to use the idea with a bright! Even a pop of colour in a muted room would be delicious.
  • If you have a small stack of old mirrors paint all the frames the same colour and lean them together on the wall or on top of a cabinet.
  • Children’s room would benefit from primary colours that pop.

Styling Idea # 371 Dark Wallpaper in Bathrooms

INSPIRATION FOR THIS POST

Happy Monday!

Found this stunning image and realised that I have never done a post on dark wallpaper in bathrooms (tell me if I have, but I couldn’t find it). Surprised? Me too! I know the whole wallpaper craze has died down and we are not all gushing at printed walls however a small room (such as a bathroom) dark prints are perfect and full of personality!

Now, can you see why I was inspired- I even love the curtains in the background! If you are not into florals geometric prints will also work…..

Styling Idea # 370 Leather Bench Seats

INSPIRATION FOR THIS POST

I wish I had some stories to share with you all from that week that was, now we are at Friday. However, I have been a) enjoying lattes and sleep ins or b) working on a business plan worthy of a Qantas take over bid so nothing really exciting to report (not hard in Oz at the moment). I cannot wait to share more details on the business plan however I will hold off until things are a little more set.

In other news if you are looking at filling a large space and wanting to create some dimension consider a low leather bench seat or chaise. Perfect for larger warehouse spaces with an industrial feel or as a room divider in any style you desire. Simply add cushions or a throw that suits your room decor….

Styling Idea # 369 Pink Doors

INSPIRATION FOR THIS POST

Will I get into trouble for posting two pink things in a week?

Readers will know that is NOT my style in fact I rarely dabble in the lolly shade because it often falls short of being sophisticated and ends up looking try hard. However these images prove me wrong and get me a little inspired so I thought I would share. Although the painted bookcase idea (Idea # 368) could be any colour this post is all about PINK DOORS…..please let me know what you think? Are we looking at a replacement for the coveted red door?

Styling Idea # 368 Colored Bookcases

INSPIRATION FOR THIS POST

If I had to fit all of these styling ideas into one house could you imagine the chaos! And the beauty?

Some ideas are totally impossible and larger than life, others (my goal is for the majority to fall into this others category) are for simple and clever ideas that you really use.

Maybe….. colored bookcases. Try them horizontal and near empty or vertical and stacked. Pick a colour that is no where else in the room or find something subtle from artwork, rugs or cushions to play up the repeat factor. Have fun with this one.
