Styling Idea # 427 Bath Bench

Oh, sweet Friday! Such a promise of long days and keeping warm in lazy ways. If you don’t already have a bath bench make sure you grab one before it gets really chilly. Books, magazines, tea, candles and lotions all need a home nearby. Leave the mobile phone on silent and enjoy some piece and quiet.

If you don’t have a bath- move.

Styling Idea # 370 Leather Bench Seats

I wish I had some stories to share with you all from that week that was, now we are at Friday. However, I have been a) enjoying lattes and sleep ins or b) working on a business plan worthy of a Qantas take over bid so nothing really exciting to report (not hard in Oz at the moment). I cannot wait to share more details on the business plan however I will hold off until things are a little more set.

In other news if you are looking at filling a large space and wanting to create some dimension consider a low leather bench seat or chaise. Perfect for larger warehouse spaces with an industrial feel or as a room divider in any style you desire. Simply add cushions or a throw that suits your room decor….

Styling Idea # 350 Windows Inside

Oh my! What a delicious idea and why on earth is this not done more often? Windows (complete with window panes and window sills) inside.  Please please please???

Emmas Design Blog

  • I would love this idea from kitchen to sunroom, or like here from dining to living.
  • Think about this for internal hallways.
  • It would be amazing in a main bedroom to separate a bathroom or powder room.

Styling Idea # 330 Woolen Stool

I am pleased to report that my flat mate and I managed to pull of a suitably sophisticated and adult style canapes party on the weekend. Whilst generally I am a cabanossi and cheese cubes kind of entertainer my flat mate pushed us to the limit to deliver everything from home made sausage rolls and bruschetta to lemon rings with Bocconcini, basil and anchovies and balini from a Gourmet Traveller recipe. Phew. I was also treated in return to a splendid party complete with jazz band right inside the inner city apartment. Yes….it seems I have graduated to the grown up parties. And what a joy.

I wonder if being grown up will also mean a return to lovely old fashion pastimes such as knitting (which i can do) and crochet (need idea how!)- but loving these adorable stools. Soon to be available here in Australia via I met these girls at the PYD markets and they are just starting out- please email them for more details if you are interested.

Styling Idea # 317 Magazine Bench

Oh, did I tell you I saw the Bill Cunningham documentary? It was incredible and inspiring to boot! You should totally go and see this for a lesson on following your passion. One of my favourite things about the film is when it is revealed that he almost never accepts a pay cheque- “as soon as they pay you… they own you”. Gotta love someone who truly believes that and has the courage to live by it.

Bill Cunningham

Bill lived in a small closet size space with filing cabinets and kept every negative of film. Kinda beats a killer stack of magazines….although I do love magazines and would totally love this bench style as my storage choice.

Ship and Anchor

  • Try this in a home office, hall or entrance
  • Keep the piles separate and spaced out
  • When you think you have enough you probably need about 300 more! Get shopping

Styling Idea # 226 Rich Tuesday

I am totally obsessed with blues and turquoise and navy and piping. So to find them all in the same image is heaven. Diane Bergeron’s home was featured in Vogue Living a while ago (so this is not the first time I have seen this image) and for readers of the mag I am sure you will not forget this breathtaking space. I WANT NEED MUST HAVE this wallpaper!

Styling Idea # 214 Afternoon Tea Booth

Yesterday was cold cold cold in Sydney. Seriously this weather has to pick up because I am not sure how long I can allow myself a “treat” because it is cold.My office has erupted into a sea of cupcakes, mint slices, croissants, cinnamon toasts and cups of hot chocolate- all because ‘it’s cold’. Not a great idea for the waistline. If I was sitting somewhere like this and enjoying the moment in a twinset it would be worth it but mindless office munching must end- pronto.

I hope you enjoy some afternoon style treats over the weekend- I’m off of to the theater and otherwise enjoying a rare weekend at home so I will tell you about that Monday xxx

  • I know I know, I have a thing for booths- but this one was so cute I couldn’t resist
  • Who could ignore something that is such a great use of space- one could have a put an armchair and a side table or an afternoon tea spot for five.
  • This is the perfect solution for mini sized homes these days- where do you create a sense of drama if you don’t have the luxury of a formal living space??? Here!
  • I think that this space would get used about 10% of the time for more than one person, 30% for a solo reader and tea sipper BUT it will look incredible and set the scene for the whole room 100% of the time. Worth it
  • I love the use of contrasting fabric on the chairs and the bold stripes on the upholstery. The colour and pattern combinations are endless so don’t be boring. Mix dainty with bold, stripes with florals, brights with neutrals.
  • This is one place I would not advocate cushions- keep it clean.
  • Are the tables too small for trays of scones? Maybe. If you are keen to expand the table top surface area look for a glass top table with similar finishes or even a modern perspex looking table would blend well.
  • PS please don’t ignore the perfect drapery in this shot- I may be an advocate for booths but I am about to get really big on window dressing- curtains are like a Hermes belt- expensive, not really necessary for their intended function BUT incredibly beautiful and important and creating a space that screams money and a designer eye.

Styling Idea # 201 Bench Seats with Tray Table

Cold days are supposed to be about sitting around and sipping tea. Not going to work and needing coffee. We have got it all wrong!

I love this simple little way to had personality.

Absolutely Beautiful Things

  • I love that these bench seats have been left just far enough apart to add a small tea tray- so simple but excellent styling- not to mention functional to boot.
  • Note that this images uses a rug on the floor and on the wall- I’m a fan.
  • Mix patterns in the cushions and make sure there is enough to be comfortable.

Styling Idea # 177 Bench as Coffee Table

When you first start writing a blog you always have another blog in mind as inspiration. I wanted my blog to be like Apartment Therapy– then I realized that Australia doesn’t have THAT many apartments and it is a much bigger and better blog headquarters than I ever will be. But I still love to read it- they have done an amazing job of ideas and concepts, one of which is the Small/Cool contest. The idea is simple- small apartments that look amazingly cool. Ta da!

I encourage you to check it out for loads of inspiration and eye candy (if you are not already one of the millions of people ready this site) however I choose to share this with you because it is just sooooo clever.

  • Ok, there are plenty of clever styling ideas here but I want to draw your attention to the wooden bench being used as a coffee table!
  • Notice how narrow the room is however it is been balanced by a small wooden bench and creates an illusion of width!
  • How wide does your coffee table need to be to practical- rest a book, eat dinner, put down your coffee- sound like this is about the right width.
  • Finally- hanging the prints all the way to the ceiling and the mini dining table set up and pure genius too!!
