Styling Idea # 433 Black Tall Boy

 INSPIRATION FOR THIS POST

OK, I promise I attempted to post yesterday- the wordpress site was playing up. I promise.

Anyway…I’m loving the bold use of colour on this tall boy. It’s part country, part scandi, part modern, part classic. Go for different paint finishes to suit your look. High gloss for modern glamour, rustic matt with some buffed edges for a worn look. Combine with crisp white furniture for immediate Scandinavian kudos or a simple water jug with lavendar for a completely different look.

Oh…did I mention that is excellent storage to boot! Favourite furniture piece award!

Styling Idea # 406 Autoban Love

INSPIRATION FOR THIS POST

I spent the best part of the weekend (i.e the sunny Sunday part) under a pile of files and brochures and links looking for the perfect bed for my upcoming photoshoot.

It turns out that no matter how hard I try I have really expensive taste! There really is just no compromise on excellent design and you can spot it a mile off! I am currently lusting over this delicious Throne Bed from Autoban. Really, this is my idea of the perfect bed.

Autoban is an Istanbul Design studio that develops architecture and design projects. It was established in 2003 and has grown to a team of 35 that have already delivered over 300 projects- pretty impressive growth I say. Autoban’s Suite Bed was recently awarded Best Bed in the Wallpaper 2012 Design Awards- check it out here.

In fact the whole site is worth spending at least half your Monday procrastinating! If you get sprung for doing no work today just blame Autoban. Meanwhile, I’m off to Luke Furniture in Melbourne to demand that I can hire this for the photoshoot! If you’re in Sydney and keen to see the range you can pop into Spence and Lyda

Styling Idea # 405 Ercol Purchase (Excitement)

INSPIRATION FOR THIS POST

I see a lot of furniture. A lot of lamps, chairs, sofas and tables. I used to work at Vampt Vintage surrounded by simply the best Scandinavian designs in the world and yet I had not encountered real life Ercol. Founded in 1920 in England this remarkable furniture house has produced quality craftsmanship for almost a century.

You may already be familiar with some of the originals that are back in production in a new colour palette?

Ercol Originals

I am pleased to say I am now the proud owner of a set of four Ercol dining chairs. My new purchase (how exciting) was a super find from Red Rider in St Kilda (thanks to Josh for the excellent service). The design I fell in love with is a little more retro dating from the 1960’s however they feel very shaker in their simple aesthetic would you agree? Whilst I am not sure these are collectable at the moment I do not intend to re-sell anytime soon so I don’t mind a bit. They are in original condition (Ercol stickers in tack) and have delicious retro fabric covers. The million dollar question is would I ever paint them???

Ercol 1960's Dining Chair

Have a great weekend everyone! If you happen to find an Ercol love seat anywhere give me a call…..I think I might start a collection.

Styling Idea # 401 Rustic and Modern (2)

INSPIRATION FOR THIS POST

I am sometimes so excited when I sit down to post that I could give you all 1000 ideas. And others days I am stumped and cannot find anything that gets the ideas flowing. If I am in the former category (like today) I am literally likely to be wriggling around in my chair and bursting with enthusiasm. I will, however, exercise restraint and just give you the daily dose (Take 1 idea with morning meal).

Yesterday I started on this idea and was delighted when I found this image this morning because it expands the vision and gives you a whole new way of executing it. I love the mismatched chairs anyway because that is super fun, but using the rustic ones with the colours naturally lifting away is even better!

Following the most extensive search of interior stores and suppliers ever conducted I can now provide some suggestions of where to find these goodies!

MelbourneThe Junk Company, Used Pty Ltd, and Nook (Racheal at Nook is super lovely so feel free to ask what else may be available).

Sydney:  Check out ici et la, The Country Trader (more expensive but pretty inspiring) and Quintessential Duck Egg Blue

London, New York, Wagga…so no such suggestions. (please share if you can). Anyway this is me signing off for the long weekend! Happy Easter everyone and I will catch you Tuesday.

Styling Idea # 379 Yellow Stove and Matching Artwork!

INSPIRATION FOR THIS POST

It would be fair to say that I move around a bit.

Careers, houses, cities, wardrobes, hairstyles, diets – yep I change these things more often than the lint in my clothes dryer (or I would if I owned one). You see, since I have been posting FURNNISH (18 months now) I have lived in 5 houses. Yep, I am now putting on the kettle in the fifth kitchen I have enjoyed calling home since the blogs inception. I have never understood the hype around the embracing change book by Spencer Johnson “Who Moved my Cheese?” -really other people are afraid of change?

I wonder what all this says about me? Restless, impatient, unpractical, dreamer or running away? Does anyone else live like this? “Flying by the seat of my pants” (weird saying, I know). Anyway….I have made a really important move that will hopefully but an end to this silliness and this unprofitable way of living. Long ago I said I would move back to Melbourne when I felt ready to settle down. I think you know the feeling? It is more about stillness and comfort for me than babies and glory boxes. It is about feeling at home and happy doing the day to day things. It is not needing my GPS, it is owning flour until weasels move in, it is growing a garden the next season. And it is, of course, getting to the point where you are RE-decorating a room…not simply decorating for the first time.

So….that being said Melbourne is it! Unless anyone has offers going in New York or Paris! I could pack overnight!

I couldn’t help but share this sunny sunny way to style with yellow for a Friday! Take one large yellow statement piece and repeat with beautiful yellow painting. If you cannot deal with a yellow stove think about a yellow kitchen table, drinks trolley, butchers block, bentwood chairs or tufted yellow armchair!

Happy friday y’all!

Styling Idea # 378 Gold Trims

INSPIRATION FOR THIS POST

Ok…I am predicting a major gold revival!

Interiors have been awash with silver and its shady cousins (grey, chandeliers, crystal, mirror furniture) for too long! Let’s get for gold (I honestly was not meaning to create a pun) and embrace this new hue along with brass, wood, leather and a pop of brights!

Styling Idea # 376 Style Up the Mattress!

INSPIRATION FOR THIS POST

I missed a day yesterday.

A total DNP (Did Not Post). Sorry. And as for today, I am totally exhausted, fighting the flu and succumbing to the lolling sound of the rain……..zzzzzz.

Anyway….welcome back and thanks for your patience. I found this little gem and thought “Arhh Haa! How clever!” Hope it makes up for it.

What to do when you have a spare room that needs a little something? A space that people could sleep if needed, a space that looks as smart as the rest of your stylish home, a space that says “Hey, don’t use me as a junk room…I demand respect!” I say you style up a mattress!

TRANSLATION: TRY THIS AT HOME

  • I personally adore the smart, clean lines of the long skinny cushions!
  • However if you are feeling suitably boho and lo-lo (to the ground) adding some Moroccan, Tibetan or Spanish flavored cushions would be spicy and delicious.
  • Yes, add the rug, yes, create a makeshift side table for glasses of water, magazines and a guest soap
  • Yes, hang the wall prints above at a height that works with the low proportions. Anyone caught hanging too high will be disappointed.
  • DO use a thick, quality fitted white sheet (or two) that is not going to show through any nana flowers prints underneath (You may also wish to consider other suitable colours such as grey, linen or navy)
  • If you have a bed and base (mattress with a base support) you could remove the wheels and create a similar look.
  • DON’T ignore this special space when visitors are away – day beds are a fabulous retreat.
  • PS- don’t you just love the way these prints are hung?????

Styling Idea # 367 Rich Tuesdays – A Moroccan Tour

INSPIRATION FOR THIS POST

Ok, it is no real surprise that Sara Chamberlain (me) wants to be a) rich and b) the queen of Morocco. We have been through both of these concepts many times before on FURNNISH and you, dear reader are always sympathetic to my fantasies (although, it would have been nice for someone to point out that I was using up two wishes when in fact the Queen  of Morocco is probably rich anyway…..oh well).

So, here on my return to Rich Tuesday’s I will give you a quick tour around my palace. (I am just being silly, but isn’t that what blogs are for??)

PS Thanks for reading my peeps!

PPS If your images are not lining up I am sorry, can’t work that out….won’t need to worry too much when I am the Queen I guess…others around to help with such tasks.

Styling Idea # 366 Black Four Poster Bed

INSPIRATION FOR THIS POST

Thank you to everyone who remembered my birthday yesterday- your messages and calls made me feel special all day!! I had the most perfect and relaxing day (many hours spent pinning if I am to be honest).

That is where I came across this delight- serious love factor here. Of course the ceiling, panels and windows in the first image means it could have a bed made of milk crates and look amazing however what about these beds?

Styling Idea # 365 Mirror on the Floor

INSPIRATION FOR THIS POST

Oh, dear…I am sorry I am late today. (New comers- this is not my style. PS thanks for following)

Slept in majorly and had to run to the hairdresser (peanut butter toast in hand). When I got home from the salon the nice “molten brown with suitable variations” I had requested looked more Cruella De Vil than I had expected.

Dang….back to the salon I go to say “it’s a bit stripy here, here and WTF is this bit here?” …..No matter how nice you intend to sound telling someone that they have done a crap job always feels harsh…..blah blah blah… Brown hair with nearly no variations….Complete.

It does feel a little underwhelming that today’s post is #365 because I have been posting since Aug 2010….but weekends really add up I guess. Meanwhile, shopping for a floor length mirror yesterday I was shocked to find that they are nearly extinct in homeware stores. What is that about? Grab one this weekend before they disappear completely. Big, bold and the perfect combination of practical and stylish. Me love.
