Styling Idea # 433 Black Tall Boy

OK, I promise I attempted to post yesterday- the wordpress site was playing up. I promise.

Anyway…I’m loving the bold use of colour on this tall boy. It’s part country, part scandi, part modern, part classic. Go for different paint finishes to suit your look. High gloss for modern glamour, rustic matt with some buffed edges for a worn look. Combine with crisp white furniture for immediate Scandinavian kudos or a simple water jug with lavendar for a completely different look.

Oh…did I mention that is excellent storage to boot! Favourite furniture piece award!

Styling Idea # 374 B&W Architectural Highlights + Awards

INSPIRATION FOR THIS POST (make sure you read to the bottom today)

I am in love with the idea of Black and White being used to highlight natural architectural features. White is perfect but the splash of black takes these already stunning spaces to another level. When sophistication meets simplicity the result is irresistible. Do we agree? Think skirting, window frames, cornices, panels, doors…..

Styling Idea # 371 Dark Wallpaper in Bathrooms

Happy Monday!

Found this stunning image and realised that I have never done a post on dark wallpaper in bathrooms (tell me if I have, but I couldn’t find it). Surprised? Me too! I know the whole wallpaper craze has died down and we are not all gushing at printed walls however a small room (such as a bathroom) dark prints are perfect and full of personality!

Now, can you see why I was inspired- I even love the curtains in the background! If you are not into florals geometric prints will also work…..

Styling Idea # 366 Black Four Poster Bed

Thank you to everyone who remembered my birthday yesterday- your messages and calls made me feel special all day!! I had the most perfect and relaxing day (many hours spent pinning if I am to be honest).

That is where I came across this delight- serious love factor here. Of course the ceiling, panels and windows in the first image means it could have a bed made of milk crates and look amazing however what about these beds?

Styling Idea # 360 Black and White Spines

Well, I am pleased to say the packing was less stressful than I had anticipated and I managed to break it up with a long lunch with friends and delicious dinner at Orto Trading Co. If you must work you must dine I say!

So, after moving you may imagine that I would bemoan the purchase or any more books…ever! However, this is too smart and stylish to pass up. Of course we have seen colour coded before but the smart placement and the simple lines make this even better!

Styling Idea # 351 Black Feature Wall (with windows)

I am over feature walls. And yet there is still a place for them. I would argue that they are allowed in the following spaces 1) small areas like bathrooms for impact 2) following on from this theme I would add alcoves to create dimension 3) in the wall that is the source of light.

Here the wall is broken up and the colour is still able to create a dramatic pop for the bright primary colours in the space. Of course super cool furniture, lighting, artwork and flora also helps!

Enjoy the weekend people!

Styling Idea # 340 Pendants and Mirror in Kitchen- oh my!

Yesterday I said you could hang a mirror low to the ground, now I am suggesting hanging it in the kitchen.

Well, I never! This person must seriously be related to my mother otherwise how on earth would they know that mirrors and pendants are completely acceptable anywhere- even over the kitchen bench. What a joy.

  • This is a perfectly acceptable way to do a small kitchenette if you are renovating
  • Marry palettes together if you are trying to create spaciousness, if you are a bit more daring you could opt for printed shades or perhaps a feature colour around the frame of the mirror. If subtle is not your style try a bright colour on the frame and consider painting the legs of one of the chairs in the same hue.
  • Don’t worry if the mirror looks “un-kitchen-like” it is fine to use any style….except ugly
  • Play with other streamline spaces like desks or built in cabinets that are looking dull and dated.
  • PS Don’t you just love the checked chair!!

Styling Idea # 318 Runner Along Bed

After a dreamy, long sleep listening to the sound of rain I was lucky enough to sleep in today as I don’t start until 10am! Gotta love a mid week late start. Although it does afford you the extra time to do good things, like exercise, I opted for the extra good things, like pancakes. I thought this little story had a nice link with the play on word title of this post “Runner along bed” – kinda doesn’t make sense until you see the picture.

One Hour

  • The beauty of this styling idea is creates the illusion of two things- 1- extra space. 2- segregation. Both of which are excellent things to achieve in the smallish spaces that are bedrooms.
  • You have two options- go with the palette of the room for a neutral streamline look or inject a new colour or pattern for fun.
  • I love that your eye is drawn to the dresser and mirror- don’t let this idea run to no mans land- have a destination at the end.

Styling Idea 289 # Zig Zags

I must say I am little disappointed. The House and Garden top 50 rooms are now online and I was so excited to check them out. However the quality and inspiration level zig zags all over the place! (What a PUN!) But seriously, I am sure these rooms are beautiful in real life however most just loose the wow factor in the photography. My mum’s house should be in the list next year because some of her rooms kick arse over these. We just need a really good photographer to capture the moment. Visit the slideshow here and let me know what you think.

Styling Idea # 277 Paint the inside of your bookcase

I think it is always exciting when I find new ways to add colour. You see the balance of a few shades is all about what makes a room work. However, often it is hard to add colour in new ways. Here in a room of cream and beige and butter the stark black chairs are supported by the back of the bookcase! Incredible!

Just think…if you are renting you couldn’t paint the wall to get this strong block of colour but you can paint the inside of your bookcase and style it with enough space for the color to show through.

I think dark colours would work best chocolates, black, navy, green, mustard or raspberry!! But don’t forget soft mint for a bathroom cabinet (with rolled up towels and Jo Malone candles on display) or bright pink for a girls bedroom.

I don’t think I can over estimate how excited I am about this idea- I cannot wait to try it out!
