FURNNISH Blog Today: Styling Idea # 388 Orange Check

INSPIRATION FOR THIS POST

As a born again Melbournian I have been spending a fair bit of time reading through The Design Files. It’s kinda like getting out and about and having a good shop without having to leave the comfort of your own home. (Although, cabin fever has set in and today I WILL be getting out and about to see these stores in the flesh). Anyway, I cam across these lovely images and wanted to this floor immediately.

Plantation coffee house was designed by Foolscap Studio in collaboration with Jennifer Lowe and Brooke Thorn. All the photos by Tracey Lee Hayes . For more photos and details of the project CLICK HERE.

FURNNISH Blog Today: Styling Idea # 381 Kumquats

INSPIRATION FOR THIS POST

Yeah….Mum and Dad’s house didn’t drown in the floods! I am not even sure it got wet as the flood was due to water upstream not rain! Excellent news. Back to the blog now.

I saw this sunny image and thought it was such a nice twist on the indoor plant craze that is sweeping the world. I’m going to take a stab and say these are kumquat plants BUT if anyone would like to correct me I would be really relieved! I’m no green thumb peeps.

Anyway, what do we think? Is it too formal? I have a stunning larger than life black and white photograph in the background somewhere to keep it fresh and young. It sure would welcome you home I think.

Styling Idea # 371 Dark Wallpaper in Bathrooms

INSPIRATION FOR THIS POST

Happy Monday!

Found this stunning image and realised that I have never done a post on dark wallpaper in bathrooms (tell me if I have, but I couldn’t find it). Surprised? Me too! I know the whole wallpaper craze has died down and we are not all gushing at printed walls however a small room (such as a bathroom) dark prints are perfect and full of personality!

Now, can you see why I was inspired- I even love the curtains in the background! If you are not into florals geometric prints will also work…..

Styling Idea # 157 Pink and Orange

INSPIRATION FOR THIS POST

Yeah- I thought this colour scheme was tacky too- until I saw this photo. What a great idea for a little girls room- fresh and pretty.

  • The key here is to stay clear of primary colours- don’t use primary basic orange or pink instead stick with mustard base tones, soft fairy floss, raspberry and softly softly blend.
  • Use stripes and checks but be careful of too much floral
  • Be inspired by nature and mix a little green where you can!

Styling Idea # 154 More Mirrored Furniture

INSPIRATION FOR THIS POST

I know, I have already done a post about mirrored furniture. And if I was being technical this idea might have to be #153.5 but hey, sometimes your heart leaps out of your chest at the site of a piece of furniture and you think it is definitely worth sharing with the world. For those who have seen this- well done on being savvy online consumers, for those of you who have not- happiness is here.

Have you ever seen mirrored velvet chairs!

Are you kidding me? Of COURSE I want to try this at home. I used to say when I grow up I want to work at Elle Decor now I want to have a house that is featured in Elle Decor! Or maybe 5

Styling Idea #71 A touch of Orange

INSPIRATION FOR THIS POST

I think orange is such an underrated colour for styling. I love it in all it’s guises- from strong citrus tangerine to primary orange to softer peaches and yet you see so little of it used. I guess people are not sure how to bring it into the space, how to introduce it without it taking over or how to use it without it screaming 70’s!!. These shots are great examples of it done correctly.

  • Although I really want to re-style the top photo I do love the orange sideboard and the idea of the fabric on the chair- pick one strong piece of furniture in a block orange colour and break it up with a printed white and orange piece nearby- easy.
  • I was going to make a rule that orange should be in white rooms but I love the second picture and the dreamy cream and dusty blue palette seems to be working a treat. Ottomans in a bright colour are an excellent idea for adding an unrelated but harmonious colour to your room. Skip the tufting if you want a cleaner look.
  • Yes, feature walls are dated, but not all feature walls are painted the colour of Sherbet Lollies- if they were they would still be totally acceptable (however I suspect the full room is in the colour).
  • Ideas for pieces of furniture you could paint in a great orange – drink trolleys, tallboys, side tables, bentwood chairs, blanket boxes, stools or kids desks.
  • If you want a smaller touch of orange think of cushions, clocks, piping on upholstery (pretty!!) photo frames, throw rugs, jugs, vases, serving trays on coffee tables, penguin book spines.
  • Yes, orange is a huge retro colour so you will find plenty of second hand vintage pieces to add a splash until you get used to the hue.

Did anyone hear Lucy on Triple J yesterday- what a clever little lady! Congrats on launching such an exciting calendar- still loving your blog! (The Design Files)
