Styling Idea # 430 Mosaic Shower

I’m so sorry! Somehow I managed to not press publish on my post yesterday.

I was out and about styling properties! We did a lovely installation in a three bedroom + study, kitchen and dining. I was really happy with the results. Property styling is so satisfying as empty spaces take shape and you can create a character for each room to play. Unfortunately you see less and less personality in bathrooms. I know that we want bathrooms that don’t date and spaces that are clean and fresh but it would be nice to see someone have a little bit of spark in their approach.

What do you think of something like this?? I think the pattern is a little dated but I love the idea of stepping into  an oasis of softer prints and subtle motifs. I would include a long bench seat in the shower for your bits and pieces and so you can sit back and let the water run over you…..include meditation tape and candles. Bliss.

Styling Idea # 427 Bath Bench

Oh, sweet Friday! Such a promise of long days and keeping warm in lazy ways. If you don’t already have a bath bench make sure you grab one before it gets really chilly. Books, magazines, tea, candles and lotions all need a home nearby. Leave the mobile phone on silent and enjoy some piece and quiet.

If you don’t have a bath- move.

Styling Idea # 371 Dark Wallpaper in Bathrooms

Happy Monday!

Found this stunning image and realised that I have never done a post on dark wallpaper in bathrooms (tell me if I have, but I couldn’t find it). Surprised? Me too! I know the whole wallpaper craze has died down and we are not all gushing at printed walls however a small room (such as a bathroom) dark prints are perfect and full of personality!

Now, can you see why I was inspired- I even love the curtains in the background! If you are not into florals geometric prints will also work…..

Styling Idea # 356 Dresser in Bathroom

I can honestly say I have just finished one of the best weekends all year. A perfect mixture of:

  • Long dinners (Oscillate Wildly)
  • Australia Day celebrations
  • Drinks at the local (The Hive)
  • Cheap and cheerful mexican (El loco – Surry Hills. Yes, you should)
  • Cocktails at the regular (Pocket bar. Yes, you should)
  • And treating myself to the ultimate Christmas present treatment at Jo Malone.

It is fair to say on reading this list that I ate a lot, drank a lot and have reasons for sore feet (dancing to 3am anyone?). What is kinda crazy is that I enjoyed the luxury of a Jo Malone fragrance consultation (with champagne included- as if there was not enough alcohol already?) as much as the cold sausage sandwich in the late hours of Australia Day. Happy with luxury and happy with the little things I say!

Today (after all of that) I will pick luxury….

Styling Idea # 315 Cream Bathroom

Emma Design Blog

I really hate that I have missed two weeks! My internet connection trouble was only supposed to have me offline for a couple of days and here I am a 2 weeks later. Oh well, on wards and upwards- still 485 of these to do so 10 days out is not too bad.

So, what has been happening since I last wrote? Not much actually but I did spend a lovely weekend in Canberra celebrating an engagement. Lots of weddings, engagements and babies around at the moment.

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could stay somewhere special when you go to weddings instead of the usual hotel rooms? I’m thinking of something that could be booked out by guests and is designed to be an accommodation solution when you are at weddings? Powder rooms, baby sitting services, 2 hour dry cleaning, make artists, gift wrapping services, nail salon, handbag hire, hair dressers, late check outs, TV screens welcoming guests!! Wow- I am loving this idea.

You would have to make the bathrooms amazing. This image is more residential (althought it is from Babylonstoren, a luxury hotel in South Africa) but an amazing palette that I will certainly be taking inspiration from.

Styling Idea # 298 Snake Charmer Basket- Bathrooms

Sometimes the best styling comes from having the confidence to pick something and than leave it alone. Let the design, theme, colour and texture simply be and allow the vibe of the space take over. If one item speaks to you and creates the feeling that you want try this styling idea- repeat that item. Alone. Keep it that simple and you will rewarded with loads of style in a casual restrained manner.

Try it and see what I mean

Apartment Dreams

  • Think about objects that you would normally group in threes or have as stand alone and try with two- examples include ceramics, photo frames, footstools, rose bowls, decorative jars, throw rugs.
  • Think about the simple power of 2 in surprising ways- 2 x side tables each with a different table cloth or both with a vintage lace throw in a hall….unexpected but when there is nothing else around to compete it will have twice the impact.
  • Use a backdrop that is neutral and if you feel the need for support pieces feel comfortable matching them to the theme- the black wrought iron hooks above are better than shiny silver in this case.

Styling Idea # 295 Arch Windows in Bathrooms

You will be reading this post whilst I am on a flight to regional Victoria – sorry for the prepared post, but a socialite must do what they need to do I guess! I am off to a wedding in the country- can you hear me smiling.

So whilst we are talking country and things that make me smile – baths are up there with the best. If you watched the (disappointing) Renovators finale you will have seen the gorgeous bathroom that looked out over the courtyard with an arch window (it may have been through the courtyard…but I only saw it quickly) anyway the moral to the story is it’s stunning!!

I hope your weekend brings friends, red wine and a chance to escape- mine will xxxx

Styling Idea # 288 Dark Floorboards in Bathroom

When I came across this image it took me a moment to work out what was different? Why did it work and why does it look fresh compared to other bathrooms? Apparently we always have white or light or checked floors in the bathroom. I love the idea of a deep Black Japan floor as a base for a modern space. The timeless claw bath and cornices keep this room classic and the touch of mint green can easily be painted over to keep the colours fresh as this palette dates. If you are renovating think about how much the bathroom needs to look like a bathroom as opposed to function like one!

Styling Idea # 270 Underlit Bathroom Cabinet

Seriously, when I come to building my house will there ever be a better scrap book than this blog? Four years of ideas, styles, colours, suggestions and inspiring images. I happy to do the blog for my own benefit! I am pleased I won’t forget this idea now- why oh why doesn’t everyone do this?? So simple and yet so decedent, not to mention flattering to boot!

Styling Idea # 202 Cupboard Above Toilet

I am moving! I am so excited to be gaining a courtyard, a front garden and gate, a dishwasher, a BATH, an attic style bedroom with ensuite and a dining table! Yeah! You are all invited over for dinner – seriously.

I had a dream last night that the ensuite was a pokey little old room (haven’t actually seen it) but found this so if it is small I hope it looks like this. Such a good use of space.

PS does anyone know good second hand furniture places in Sydney- all this amazing furniture people buy must be on sold somewhere! I love Home Furniture on Consignment– does anyone have any other ideas?
