Styling Idea # 381 Floating Storage Boxes

My morning writing and blogging ritual was interrupted today when I awoke to a text message from the emergency services (from overnight) that all people living in central areas of my home town were to evacuate due to raising flood waters. WTF?

What a shock…really really it’s horrible to imagine. Mum and Dad renovated a home only 2 or 3 years ago and you may have heard me talk about how much I love this place on the blog before! Even worse, my beloved grandparents have only just moved back to Wagga 3 months ago and have been busy making their unit a home around the corner. They are pensioners. They have no insurance. My grandmother is legally blind. What a crap story.

So fingers crossed today doesn’t unfold too badly….I really don’t want to think about what it could turn out like. Waters are expected to peak at 3pm so I will know more tomorrow.

Ok….so it is little wonder that I am inspired by an idea that is RAISED today!! Getting things up off the ground is probably on the brain. I don’t think this is the prettiest picture but the concept is excellent.

Raised cupboards, storage inside and above, artwork hanging below. Perfect for any small dining nook looking for a home for knickknacks, glasses, crockery, children’s pencils or even bottles of wine! Storage is always good! You could even add some lights inside or below the boxes!

Styling Idea # 362 Windows to the kitchen

If you have hours on end to spare you should totally be visiting pinterest! I personally don’t think I have ever had so much fun. It is my idea of heaven, easy yo use, endless eye candy and quick responses from the pinning community. Please be warned if you have a job, children, animals, partners, pot plants or anything else that may demand your attention in the next 48 hours this site is addictive!! (although it is a great weight loss strategy as you will forget to eat). Ok, I am sure you are sensing my love this site.

Follow the link to the credit for the below shot or you can sign up and follow me

If you don’t have time for that (I have heard some people have jobs- what is that again?) please take my advice and build some glass windows  into your kitchen. I guarantee improved cooking skills.

Styling Idea # 351 Black Feature Wall (with windows)

I am over feature walls. And yet there is still a place for them. I would argue that they are allowed in the following spaces 1) small areas like bathrooms for impact 2) following on from this theme I would add alcoves to create dimension 3) in the wall that is the source of light.

Here the wall is broken up and the colour is still able to create a dramatic pop for the bright primary colours in the space. Of course super cool furniture, lighting, artwork and flora also helps!

Enjoy the weekend people!

Styling Idea # 350 Windows Inside

Oh my! What a delicious idea and why on earth is this not done more often? Windows (complete with window panes and window sills) inside.  Please please please???

Emmas Design Blog

  • I would love this idea from kitchen to sunroom, or like here from dining to living.
  • Think about this for internal hallways.
  • It would be amazing in a main bedroom to separate a bathroom or powder room.

Styling Idea # 340 Pendants and Mirror in Kitchen- oh my!

Yesterday I said you could hang a mirror low to the ground, now I am suggesting hanging it in the kitchen.

Well, I never! This person must seriously be related to my mother otherwise how on earth would they know that mirrors and pendants are completely acceptable anywhere- even over the kitchen bench. What a joy.

  • This is a perfectly acceptable way to do a small kitchenette if you are renovating
  • Marry palettes together if you are trying to create spaciousness, if you are a bit more daring you could opt for printed shades or perhaps a feature colour around the frame of the mirror. If subtle is not your style try a bright colour on the frame and consider painting the legs of one of the chairs in the same hue.
  • Don’t worry if the mirror looks “un-kitchen-like” it is fine to use any style….except ugly
  • Play with other streamline spaces like desks or built in cabinets that are looking dull and dated.
  • PS Don’t you just love the checked chair!!

Styling Idea # 335 Colour Table- White Chairs

Cabin Fever! It really does exist and it has just occurred to me that I could never win Big Brother (not that I would want to) because I could never stay in the same house with the same people for that long. Please, don’t get me wrong….love the family and friends but it is hard when as a culture we have fostered and fought for so much independence. We create our rooms, our spaces, our bathrooms and our rituals- we have little need to share and pitch in. Perhaps it is a sad realization that our world is contained in a selfish bubble- and it is not always a bubble we want to burst.

Anyway! How about we all paint an old table these holidays- pick something bright and audacious and add simply white bentwoods!

Styling Idea # 327 Oversized Portrait

I am not the Pixie photo type. Infact, I don’t believe I have ever had a photo of my family on display. I haven’t owned a photo frame in the past 15 years and I can’t stand the idea of the rotating ones.  You will never see me posting fun time shots on facebook- I’m not on the stupid site.  However I have to admit that if you must have an image of your loved ones around make it a piece of art in it’s own right!

Check this out!

  • Try this idea on the living areas where the walls are large and can perspective.
  • Another awesome space would include the nursery , above a bath or an outdoor wall – along a verandah for example.
  • Keep the background white and use a white space to get the gallery feeling. The subject is the focus- keep it clean.

Styling Idea # 314 Themed Wallpaper

Last night I enjoyed a little wine and little dinner and a little chat with new lovely friends. We checked out 10 Williams St in Paddington. I would recommend for the food and wine but really you could skip the interiors. Amazing how little a place needs to do to get you impressed these days (oh, dear is that two bar rants in the same week? It must be summer so I am getting out more!) I hope that at some stage whilst writing these 1001 ideas I am traveling and can bring you some inspired bars from the likes of Helsinki, New York or Paris….keep your fingers crossed for me.

However, from the comfort of my Newtown terrace here is a nifty wall paper print – wish I could tell you where it is from…..anyone know??? This looks perfectly weekend inspired for me also.

Styling Idea # 309 Candle Sticks

Well, what do you know? It’s Friday already. One day off during the week sick and the days become hard to pinpoint. Not that I am complaining it is wonderful and exciting news.

I have been lusting over this idea for a while I think we should all go back to investing in good old fashion candle stick holders. They are so elegant and timeless and a welcome change from the candles in a glass that seem to be everywhere these days.

  • The number of candlesticks you use will set the mood- 1 = whimsical, 2 = formal, 3 or more = romantic.
  • Don’t use too many you don’t want to look like a bad 1980’s film clip set…..I’m having some flashback to “Total Eclipse of the Heart?”…..would that be right?
  • Be aware of the height issue when using over dinner- I would prefer to see these on side tables, occasional tables, bathroom window sills, kitchen shelves, sideboards or bookcases- take your pick people.

Whatever you do this weekend I hope it is wonderful and relaxing and wrapped up in some love and cuddles.

Styling Idea # 308 Tulip Table

Well, my regular and devoted readers may remember that I posted on the Tulip Chair back at idea # 95. However if I have 1001 of these things I say the table displayed all on it’s own… get’s a post all on it’s own. This is such a timeless design and over 50 years on it still looks as modern and stylish as ever!

Take cue from this space and leave the chairs alone. Balance with an overflowing vase of hydrangea’s for extra beauty. Sit back and sigh at the sight.
