Styling Idea # 424 A Desk & Two Chairs

INSPIRATION FOR THIS POST

Working at home means I am always looking for ways that I can make a home office look different, exciting or modern. Not that I can change it everyday but I love seeing ideas that are simple to implement. I am keen to use my Ercol Chairs as a dining table setting but if at first I cannot I would love a long skinny desk and a second a chair. Not that anyone would be using it but it looks good! (meanwhile I am always hoping for a business partner so if you want to pull up a chair let me know!)

Look out for cheap dining chairs or stools- 2 is less expensive than a full set at times and you can display them along a skinny desk with pride!

FURNNISH Blog Today: Styling Idea # 386 Bookcase Over Door

INSPIRATION FOR THIS POST

It seems I am always obsessed with ways to store and display books. So far, no one has told me this is a bad thing so I will take your silence as “yes please, more ideas for books!”

Gotta love a storage, space saving, stylish idea that makes you look sexy.

Insert- one shelf over one door.

TRANSLATION: TRY THIS AT HOME

  • Of course living areas and home office lend themselves to this idea perfectly but have you thought about the kitchen? Just make sure you have a cute stool for reaching the books.
  • Be aware of what this idea will do to your space- it will create a more closed in effect (not a bad thing) and can give the impression of  lowering the roof line (sometimes a bad thing).
  • Look for colours of the shelf that work with the room (bright yellow shelf, bright yellow cushions) and remember the spines on display need to be pretty and tidy.
  • DON’T worry about ceiling height- both high and low will work.
  • DO think about extending this over a the door all the way to the wall to keep it clean.
  • Finally, if you have the foresight when installing add some lights under the shelf for a dreamy wall scalloping effect. LOVE!

Styling Idea # 317 Magazine Bench

INSPIRATION FOR THIS POST

Oh, did I tell you I saw the Bill Cunningham documentary? It was incredible and inspiring to boot! You should totally go and see this for a lesson on following your passion. One of my favourite things about the film is when it is revealed that he almost never accepts a pay cheque- “as soon as they pay you… they own you”. Gotta love someone who truly believes that and has the courage to live by it.

Bill Cunningham

Bill lived in a small closet size space with filing cabinets and kept every negative of film. Kinda beats a killer stack of magazines….although I do love magazines and would totally love this bench style as my storage choice.

Styling Idea # 294 Go KooKoo for Kikki

INSPIRATION FOR THIS POST

I am sorry to be a copy blogger today however when I read on The Design Files that it was Kikki K’s 10th birthday I was so proud. Retail and design in this country are all hard concepts to get off the ground but staying alive for like TEN YEARS is really something else altogether. We are all aware of the “buy factor” of these amazing products- today in celebration I ask you to think about styling factor. Be inspired to be organised and enjoy the structure lines and clean palettes.

Be sure to head over the The Design Files to have a read about the lady behind the success!

Styling Idea # 234 Black Chair White Desk

INSPIRATION FOR THIS POST

I am taking a photography course as you may well know and seriously it is so inspiring. It would be such a luxury to walk around all day and wait for inspiration to strike however I am the kinda person who is always thinking…..”I wish I had my camera now!” when I don’t take it and when I take it out and about there is never anything to shoot!

Interior images never fail to inspire me for the ability to capture light and mood!

Few do it better than the photographers favored by Emma on Emma’s Blog…always fresh and always capturing the sunlight effortlessly like the human eyes does naturally.

  • I must say I really was taken with this simple idea- clean white desk- heavy masculine leather chair. Brilliant!
  • Add feminine lamp for clash of bakelite lamp for retro cool.
  • Contrast the simple black and white palette by placing this over a Persian rug and style with an indoor plant potted from the floor.

Styling Idea # 224 Mail Sorter

INSPIRATION FOR THIS POST

A friend of mine who was recently traveling with a new baby girl through South America on route moving back from Scotland to Broome (busy, difficult and exotic all in one) coined a term that I love ‘the admin of life’. It is such a great way to describe all the things that we need to do to keep up with our world.

Today is the first day of the new financial year- so perhaps we should all invest in a mail sorter for our stylish desks and get the admin of life off to a good start for 2011/2012.

  • Use a second hand mail sorter to create a cluttered/organised effect.
  • Gather old books and fancy stationary to decorate the holes that are not being used.
  • Wooden boxes, clutter tins and ribbons oh- my.

Styling Idea # 113 Slides as Artwork

INSPIRATION FOR THIS POST

Can you still make slides from your photographs? mmm maybe someone can tell me? If not you could use old slides to create your own mini gallery effect- I think this looks great.

Design Evolution

TRANSLATION: TRY THIS AT HOME

  • What I love here is the mini gallery effect- slides, Polaroids, or cut outs from favourite images would all suit if you repeat their mini size over a symmetrical pattern.
  • I think the floating shelf is important in creating a balance and supporting the smaller size of the prints above.
  • The white frames are great but black would well too.
  • Try using a primary colour frame and frame the letters of the alphabet for kids room in this style- a cute little room update with an educational basis.
  • What about using a couple of light boxes and displaying slides on the back lit box- you can pick these up from eBay.
