Styling Idea # 47 Tarten

INSPIRATION FOR THIS POST

I’m slow to jump on the show so excuse me- but I have been coveting tartan for a while now. Watching Mrs Drapers’ kitchen in Mad Men is perfect if you ask me. Not into wallpaper from the 50’s? Check this out…

  • I’m loving the chairs being upholstered in a tartan- adds a surprise over the table!
  • Remember cushions, tablecloths and rugs always add a pattern in a non-committal way- avoid lampshades (unless you have a quirky vintage base and that is look you are after)
  • Caramels, greens, reds, greys, chocolate, blue and white- lots of tartan combo’s for lots of different styles.
  • Think about throwing a traditional tartan rug over all white bed linen.
  • Blue and black tartan suits the current black and white trends and looks more modern.
  • I would love to try tartan curtains or at least a valance- perhaps a structured valance to add a pop of retro colour to a kitchen.
  • Include tartan when mixing prints- try floral, tartan, strip and animal print on scatter cushions.
  • Avoid red and green tartans or anything that resembles your old school uniform- it is hard to get past.
  • Tartans are a good pattern options that can be relatively gender neutral so it can be good in main bedrooms or kids nursery over florals.
  • Be aware of the retro nature of this print- if you incorporate it in retro shapes you will create a vintage look (retro shape chairs for example) if you use it in contemporary styles it will look modern- this is entirely up to you.
  • For a fun playful look without too much commitment add a tartan table cloth with a retro vase and flowers. HELLO SPRING!!

Styling Idea # 45 Bench Seat Dining

INSPIRATION FOR THIS POST

An excellent way to make a room look less styled and more personal is to do something unexpected.

  • This room plays with opposites- heavy black chairs with a fabric bench seat, soft lighting pieces with a strong contemporary print and formal lamps and informal dining chairs.
  • The bench seat is a great element of surprise and will always stop a space being too matchy matchy.
  • Look for fabric to cover the bench seat that adds something new to the room- a print, a colour, a style a pattern that can be repeated elsewhere.

Styling Idea # 30 White Bricks

INSPIRATION FOR THIS POST

My parents used to have an exposed brick wall in our house- I am sure many of you have lived with one at some stage. By the time we left that house 10 years on I was completely convinced that exposed brick walls were a terrible idea and they must be rendered or covered at any cost! If I was still living there now I would be in love with the brick wall again but perhaps to freshen it up we could paint it white- it adds a wonderful retro vibe.

  • Look for retro inspired lighting – Sputniks, Artichoke lights, or Castiglioni Flos light.
  • Shag pile carpet? Yes please.
  • Paint directly over pipes, radiators, plumbing whatever- industrial white is cool.
  • Whilst the top two images are more relaxed the bottom two demonstrate that the space can be more formal if you require.
  • Think about this idea for bedrooms and kitchens also.
  • Keep windows clean and undressed- we don’t want to clutter this.
