Styling Idea # 344 Rug in the Kitchen

INSPIRATION FOR THIS POST

In the land of decorating and styling the rug is akin to a magic wand. It has the powers to create invisible walls where no walls exist, it can change the mood, temperature and acoustics of a space all at once and powerfully divides or unites spaces Β at your request.

An open plan kitchen living is an excellent place to turn on some of this magic!

Styling Idea # 118 Moroccan Splashbacks

INSPIRATION FOR THIS POST

We are such a lucky country. In the wake of floods and droughts playing havoc with the very weather patterns that feed us we can still access and enjoy incredible food. Today I was fortunate enough to take home a mystery food box. In effect I selected the fruit and vegetables from the shoot (additional left overs were delivered to shelters) but I now have an abundance of delicious colourful, unique and flavorsome food I have to work out what on earth to do with! It is an exciting prospect to deal with. Swiss brown mushrooms, fennel and blueberries anyone?

Since I roasted vegetables with a Moroccan rub last night let’s get inspired by Moroccan kitchen elements….

  • There are some many colour and combination’s to choose from but you will find many of the base patterns are heavy in a blue and white- see the patterns I have included below for inspiration from other palettes.
  • These splash back do not need to be very high- the patterns are intense so you can keep them at a low height to create the impact without looking themed.
  • Continue to select your kitchen elements as you like- this look will go with beachy, traditional, classic or modern so if you want a new kitchen but cannot afford one go for new splash backs!
  • The last picture is a kitchen but I think this shows how it could work easily inside a cupboard or a butler pantry to add an element of surprise!
  • I would avoid decorative trims across the top- you will already have enough going on and the trims might look a bit bath house!

More tiles for you…..cause I love you all ;0

Styling Idea #104 Coloured Crockery

INSPIRATION FOR THIS POST

Reading a post yesterday in my daily tour of the blogs I was stopped in my tracks and reminded of the Brisbane floods. Seriously, with so much media coverage is hard to imagine that I had forgotten, and I hadn’t, but what is incredible about the human psychology is that we are very good at forgetting things that don’t directly impact our lives- we are selfish and self centered and get on with our day. It’s the law of the jungle.

The blog was “Absolutely Beautiful Things” by award winning, Brisbane based interior designer Anna Spiro. Anna wasn’t in flood effected areas but she is now facing a flood effected economy. Years of hard work, excellent design, amazing inspirational posts and images are now tethering on edge as Anna and the rest of the city ask the big questions and search for the big answers. Owning a business in home “aesthetics” and/or design may prove difficult at first in a city of the homeless but we must remember there is always a place for beauty. Brisbane residents will stick together, beautiful things will still be bought and excellent design will still be required because, in the absolute best way, we are selfish and self centered and get on with our day. Please visit Anna’s blog and leave a comment to show your support.

  • This is a very simple styling idea but worth noting- if you have any display space in your kitchen (and come to think of it mine is filled with Vita Brits and milo- yuck) you should think about how you can display this neatly with a pop of colour.
  • Everyone loves a white dinner set and most of us will have one but by selecting an ascent colour you can bring your kitchen to life.
  • You don’t need a whole other setting you just need some pops of colour in the same hue- pinks, yellow, grey, black, navy and red will all work well in a small space.
  • Other things that would work well on the coloured shelve are vases, cook book stands, salt and pepper grinders, a cute coloured kitchen radio…..let your imagination play up a bit here!
  • Layer your pieces, stack colour together, group colour together and if you want to add a second colour follow this rule with each.
  • Repeat with a kettle, some flowers, kitchen curtains, a tea towel or a coloured seat (like yesterday) for a layered impact!

mmmm I may have just inspired myself to pack away the cereal!

Styling Idea # 39 No Kitchen Shelves

INSPIRATION FOR THIS IMAGE

I’m a huge fan of food. I am also a huge fan of sharing food and preparing food. But the truth be known I am not such a great cook and a very very rarely have time to cook at home. On an average week I would cook or eat dinner at home maybe 3 times- especially over longs weekends or in summer- there is too much to do and I always seem to be out and about. Whilst the kitchen is a true hub and I don’t ever want to limit my kitchen to “one cupboard and chopping board” I do think I could do away with the overhead, over cluttered and overbearing shelves. Check this out….

  • This kitchen doesn’t have to be at the expense of all your kitchen gadgets- just be clever about where you store things and be tidy and organised.
  • Use a sideboard near your dining area that can hold your entertaining things- fancy dinner plates, platters, glasses etc
  • Keep it clean- very clean on top without clutter or mess.
  • Select appliances that blend into the colour scheme so you can take away that “kitchen” feeling.
  • The spare walls can now become amazing places for artwork, wallpaper, a splash of colour, quirky clocks, windows, photos- keep it un-kitchen like to add the element of surprise.

Styling Idea # 34 Open Kitchen Shelves

INSPIRATION FOR THIS POST

When Lewis Carroll sent Alice down the rabbit hole do you think he ever understood that that feeling would one day become a reality through technology. That rabbit hole is now called Google and if you allow it, it will suck you down so far that you literally cannot return home the same, ever. Some days when I am researching online for inspiration, clever people and interiors that knock the wind of you (hard to find, very very rare occurrence) I am left lost. My mind is altered and the way I look at things changes- irreparably. That is the thing about visual stimulation- when you digest it you can never unsee an image, unsee a style or unsee and inspiration.

It is my goal with this blog to edit sharply and bring you ideas. Ideas that inspire. Ideas that you can actually imagine living with. Ultimately I want to deliver images and ideas that are beautiful.

Here is today’s idea…..

  • For me, the brilliance of this idea is that can be a structural change to put into your next reno or an immediate kitchen up lift- today! Just take of the door and get creative.
  • My absolute favourite is the top image. Imagine if you had a collection of incredible vintage glasses in different colours and imagine if you had cute little tea sets and jugs and imagine if you had a kitchen window and you put up some shelves! Genius. Styling at it’s best.
  • If you can do structural elements think about overhead lighting inside the cupboards, painting the back of the cupboard in a different colour or wallpapering it or playing around with shelves lengths and widths.
  • If you don’t want to cover your window you have two main options to consider – be clean and white or clever and bright. Keep your items in neat rows for either options and always replace in the same order after you have done the washing up- I have lived with this styling idea and it easier to keep in tack than you may think (although I don’t live with children or teenage boys- they may be optional)

I have made some changes and you can now share the post easier with the links below- I am also tweeting ALOT of images that I find on the trot so follow me on twitter for products that I would buy….there are more updates to come but for today unscrew the hinges on your kitchen cupboards!

Have a good one πŸ˜‰
